This Friday marks the start of the 25th annual 2014 American Century Championship. More than 80 celebrities will tee off in this televised golf tournament, being held at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Lake Tahoe, CA. The total prize of $600,0000 go to charities. Even if you’re not an avid golf fan this tournament may hold quite some meaning for you, just as it does for me.
“Profits with a Purpose” and Stowers Institute for Medical Research
The title sponsor of this tournament is American Century Investments. The late Jim Stowers, founder of the company, used his own personal fortune and set up the Profits with a Purpose program to establish and fund Stowers Institute for Medical Research. This firm is dedicated to researching diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. In learning more, key findings may lead to effective treatments and cures. See some of their BioMed Valley Discoveries.
Personally, I know way too many that have been affected by the horrible monster known as cancer in one form or another. Some are survivors that are still going strong. Others, sadly, lost their fight and all that’s left are my fond memories of them. That’s why I’m so hopeful that research such as this will lead to medical and scientific breakthroughs to trump such diseases and improve human health.
Here’s a more detailed look at what the institute is all about and the involvement of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stowers, cancer survivors themselves:

I’m going to make sure my uncle tunes in he loves golf.
That’s quite the line-up, and hurrah for it.
Like you, I know some who have won their battle with cancer, and some who unfortunately have lost. My grandmother, one of my favorite people in the world, falls into the latter. 🙁
I’m so sorry to hear that 🙁 It seems that more people are being diagnosed with cancer now than ever before despite the amount of research that’s been done up to this point.
I’m not an avid sports watcher, but my husband is. I would love to support this great cause, however. I love that all of those athletes are willing to give of their time and support it.
What a great lineup! Mu husband will love it!
I love that there are so many celebrities willing to do this. I would love to go and watch!
Great line up that would be fun to watch.
This looks like so much fun to watch. I have to agree with everyone else this is a great line up.
That looks like a great charity event, I am not a big time golf watcher, but it does sound like a great charity to raise money for!
What a fun event for such a great cause. I bet everyone had a blast this weekend.
I’m not into sports. My dad and brother do though. I wonder if they tuned in to this.
We are super huge sports fans and I am just drooling over that roster! I am so glad to see so many wonderful people coming together for such a great cause.
