After all the hulaballo, I finally made it over to my local Borders here in San Mateo. And, yes, it is truly closing. Everything is on sale and nothing is held back. They announced that gift certificates are accepted but coupons are not. The discount ranges from 20-40%. When a store is closing out, in my opinion they should start at 30% at least. They’ll probably drop the prices but there probably won’t be much left as several shelves were already empty. Guess it’s more power to Amazon and e-readers!

This makes me so sad. I love to go to book stores.
As a last visit, my daughter and I sat and read on the floor for a while until our ‘cheeks’ got numb. I’ll miss that.
Chance for smaller independent bookstores to thrive once again.
Perhaps. They can provide the expertise and ‘bookstore experience’ but many will forgo that for the lower prices online.

Yep, I agree. When the ‘biggies’ can’t make it, what hope is there for other brick & mortar businesses.
I know, it’s so sad. Border’s used to be my go to store for books, but recently I’ve been going to Barnes and Nobles because they are cheaper. I guess I will be stuck with them for a while now.
Barnes & Nobles cheaper? Really? B&N is just so big, cold, and impersonal though. I wonder what’s next…
Ours isn’t closing! I’m glad, I suppose, but I went the other day to check out the sales and of course nothing was on sale! Even had a “now hiring” sign in the window!
How weird. Oh well, now we know why business isn’t going too well – bad management and planning.
