I saw this blue orchid plant and was so going to dish out $30 to get one. Good thing I decided to do some research first – they may look cool but after they die they grow back white. Bummer!

So next time someone dishes out some good dough to buy you an orchid plant, dont’ toss it right away. Cut the stem and wait for the next year.
Me too. I’ve tried but just cannot keep them going. One time a friend of mine ‘babysat’ my orchids until they regenerated and they actually grew back. But then I killed it later 😛
You can see the website addy in the picture to the right. I honestly didn’t really ‘get’ it and a rep from the company actually posted a comment below about it. Very interesting stuff though.

Shh, don’t tell your readers that! They’d be shocked to know you impulse buy! No, I almost bought it but I happened to have my hubby with me who, ahem, suggested I check it out first.
That is beautiful, I am glad you said the thing about them growing back white, I would have been bummed if I dished out the money and didn’t know that.
I know, right? That was the thing I was concerned about and the Safeway florist lady had no clue. I’m glad I happened to snap theses shots so I could check out their website at home.
Thanks. I had to do quite a bit of work on these though because I just took a quick pic on my iPhone in the grocery store. The lighting was horrible and I didn’t it quick so I wouldn’t get in trouble 😛

Always pay to research, although white would be beautiful too.
It’s some kind of special technological process but with it not re-blooming that color, it almost seems like it’s still in the experimenting phase versus a final breakthrough.

The ‘Blue Mystique’ and their sister plants, “Lilac Mystique”, are produced by our company , Westerlay Orchids, here on the West Coast.
We infuse white orchids through a patented technique that we license from the Netherlands. With proper care, they will as long as a any phalaenopsis in flower (2+ months). After that the dye is wholly absorbed in the plant and it will re-flower white.

I think the sad part is that some may be willing to buy the orchid even at inflated prices, not knowing it doesn’t grow back that color.

Ahahahah! Of course they won’t grow back blue! Using dye to change a flower’s color as existed since Mesopotamia. This is one of history’s oldest pieces of common knowledge. And it’s basic 1st grade science. If you want it to be blue when it grows back you just add more dye to the soil. You can also make it fluorescent if you want.
This is not dyed by adding color to the soil like you would in a school experiment with colored water. Various plants also respond differently to various minerals in the ground such as hyacinths, making them blue, purple, white, or pink. These are advertised as a new process in germination, affecting the buds and initial stage of growth…

Indigo Orchids are a rip-off. The one I bought had a small nick in the stem and when I touched it the
blue dye, which I assume is food dye, came off on my finger. Spread the word….don’t waste your money.

I thought it was Hydrangeas that changed color by lime or aluminum to change the Ph. Anywho, my husband bought a Blue Mystic for me and they are beautiful. The dye is injected into the roots. It’s kind of a rip off but still very beautiful.

Well, the thing was, those flowers were HUGE! So, with the right care, I’m sure they would grow back pretty – just not blue.

I’m assuming the typical length. Orchids can stay in bloom for a REALLY long time before they fall off!
