Verizon Wireless Home Phone Connect FAQ #VZWHomePhone

by TerriAnn

Over the past month, I’ve spoken with many about Verizon Wireless Home Phone Connect (see my first post). The biggest challenge seems to be that most really have no idea what it is and why they would want it. I put together this list of frequently asked questions and hope it helps you get a better idea of the new service.

Verizon Wireless Home Phone Connect Device Huawei

What isVerizon Wireless Home Phone Connect?

  • It’s a cost-effective alternative to a home phone from Verizon Wireless, using a small standalone device (by Huawei) as a receiver.

How does it work?

  • The service is based on the Verizon Wireless cellular network. It is not connected to any landlines, does not use an internet connection, is not a VOIP (voice over ip), and is unrelated to Wi-fi.

How much does it cost?

  • $19.99 per month, which includes unlimited local and long distance calls. When you sign up for a 2-year contract, the device is free. You can add this to your family-share plan for $9.99 but calls will be deducted from your allotted minutes.

What does the service include?

  • Voice
  • Caller ID Name
  • Call Forwarding
  • 3–Way Calling
  • Voicemail
  • E911 Support
  • Integrated GPS for 911 Support
  • Messaging: SMS for network message only
  • TTY/TTD Compatible
  • Device Insurance Available

Can you call internationally?

  • Yes. If you call often, you can add on an international package for $3.99 that provide lower per minute rates (i.e. Mexico is 49¢ per minute but with extra plan it is 9¢ per minute).

Can you keep your home phone number?

  • Yes. Your number can be ported to the device when you activate service or at a later time.

Is there a battery backup?

  • Yes. 43 hours of standby and 3 hours of talk time.

Can you use it with your existing phones? What about those with multiple handsets?

  • Yes. Just plug your corded or cordless phone to the device. If connecting a cordless base with multiple handsets, up to five handsets can be used. Dial *228 to activate new handset.

What installation is involved?

  • There is none. Take the device out, plug in the power, plug in your handset, activate, and use. That’s it.

What is the quality of the call?

  • It depends but is typically on par with your landline. The device also boosts the cellular signal so your calls are generally clearer than on your cell phone.

Is it portable?

  • Yes. You can take the device with you on vacation and can still be reached on your home phone number. The built-in GPS is a great safety feature as well.

Do you have to be a current Verizon Wireless customer?

  • No. The device can be a standalone Verizon Wireless account.

Will I receive a separate bill?

  • Not if you’re already a Verizon Wireless customer. The Home Phone Connect charge will show up on your current bill.

Is it a complete replacement for a landline?

  • This is a VOICE only solution. Verizon Wireless Home Connect does not (at this time) work with home security systems, fax machines, DVR services, credit card machines, or medical alert services (e.g. Life Alert). It may be possible to ‘buzz’ people into your secured building but you’ll need to check with your management.

What are the main benefits of Verizon Wireless Home Phone Connect?

  • Lowered monthly costs compared to most landline phone bills.
  • All local and long-distance calls are included in the $19.99/month price.
  • You can keep your home phone number.
  • Great to have a general, central phone number for the family.

If you have any other questions, feel free to list them here. One more twitter party is coming up and the hashtag for all tweets is #VZWHomePhone. In my next and final post, I will share my experience with the service as well as post a great giveaway! Stay tuned!

I was provided a device, cordless phone, complimentary service for three months, and compensation by Verizon Wireless to participate in this program. This, however, will not affect me in providing my 100% honest opinion in this or subsequent posts I write regarding the sponsoring company.

LOVE that there’s no installation. Sometimes that’s the biggest pain of all.

So true…and usually the most expensive too. Plug ‘n play is the way to go!

Excellent summary. This product is definitely a big surprise for most.

Thank you. The concept is a bit hard for most to get their head around as it’s so different. If they could only get it to work with fax then they’d get a whole boatload of new customers, though.

Wow Love your review. Do you know is it available in all areas? – Im so excited as I have been waiting to get rid of my digital phone and was thinking of doing Vontage but this appears to be a better deal and I already am a Verizon customer
Thank you!

There are only three lights that are lit up on the top of my Home Connect receiver. The three are the center three. The last light on the left and the last light on the right are not lit and I cannot call out and no one can call me–it goes right to voicemail. Please help!

Oh no! I would definitely call (when you do have connection outside the home) Verizon for help or maybe even try to do an online chat to figure it out. Sorry I can’t help more but this seems like an issue to take up with the VZW troubleshooting department.
