Cradle of Rome 2, the sequel to the addicting match-3 game that began it’s reputation on the PC, is now available for the Nintendo DS and 3DS. This game combines matching tiles with building the famed city from Rome from the ground up.

Certain tiles are colored blue (and later green) and you need to make a match over that tile to break it. A match is made by moving individual pieces into rows/columns with three or more like icons. Break all the colored tiled to move to the next level. Matching particular icon groups will help you accrue gold, resources, and food. Those in turn are used to ‘build’ various items in your budding Roman empire. Up to two players can save their game progress.

The game is very simple and it’s fun to see the city growing. Yet, added obstacles cause the game to get much harder, and very quickly at that.When you get into into levels 30 and up, it becomes especially difficult. The nice this is that, if you are not able to complete the level within the time limit, there is no penalty to try again. There were several levels that stumped me. I just can’t seem to get past level 49 and it looks like my city is only partially built.

As the gameplay is basically the same throughout, it may get boring or frustrating for some. For others, much time might be spent trying to pass certain levels (people like me). Still, this is an entertaining game with a lot of variety and beautiful graphics. Older children and adults will find hours of enjoyment.
