The Magic Tap – No More Crying Over Spilled Milk

Some might be irritated when they see infomercials playing on their favorite channels. As for me, I love them! I’m pretty good at controlling my impulse to buy the items but I can get really into their pitches and love watching the ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ from the audience audio track. Most of them are pretty cool, though there are a select few would have been better if they just stayed as a good idea. I was not sure what to think of The Magic Tap but was willing to give it a try after seeing it on display at BlogHer ’12.

This battery-operated pump allows for users to get their favorite drink without having to drag around a heavy gallon of milk or giant juice container. Now children can get their drinks themselves and without the mess! Whoever said ‘it’s no use crying over spilled milk’ obviously never had to clean it up afterwards…

We put The Magic Tap on a new gallon of milk and it was ready to go. All that was left was to lightly press a cup against the lever. When doing so, the milk shot out at high speed. The angle that the liquid goes out a takes a little getting used to but you’ll quickly get the hang of. In fact, it’s downright fun! As my daughter is lactose intolerant (and I’m starting to show signs as well), she would beg to pour her dad a glass of milk just to use it.

• Note: The spout trigger is VERY sensitive. Be careful when putting the apparatus on a new container and turn it inwards after use to prevent accidentally hitting the trigger.

When that gallon was done, we inserted the device into the next one. We noticed that the milk tasted funny and that solid bits were on the spout. I later found out that it my fault since I neglected to read the directions carefully. We should have cleaned out the pump and wiped it down with water before putting it in a new container. Also, I didn’t realize that the rubber cap on the bottom flipped up to better fit bottles with shorter necks, such as that of MILK. Whoops. No wonder it tasted nasty – it was basically fully open the whole time and had old milk running through it. Yuck!

• Lesson learned: You MUST read the directions thoroughly and follow them to a tee. Operation seems easy but you’ll be sorry  (like me) if you disregard them.

The first The Magic Tap that we received stopped working and could have been a defective one. The company quickly sent another as they are very confident of their products’ quality. Now it works perfectly. I’m so bummed that I can’t drink straight milk anymore and will likely have to fight with my daughter to get my husband some milk. Either that or we’ll have to start putting our favorite drinks in bigger containers!
