How awesome would it be to write any noun and it just pops to life? That’s what Maxwell does in Scribblenauts Unlimited for Nintendo 3DS. In this latest installment, we finally find out how Maxwell got his special notebook and about his family, which includes 41 siblings. You will again use your imagination to collect Startites, but this time it’s to save Maxwell’s sister, Lily.
Scribblenauts has come a long way since its debut on the DS several years ago back in 2009. In addition to a wide variety of nouns, player can now add any number of adjectives to create unique people, places, and things. Want a purple-striped, flying dog? No problem. Have to come up with a unique way to put out the safety dummy that’s on fire? Yes, sounds about right.
We had the original Scribblenauts but my daughter found this one more enjoyable. She loves the gameplay and  I often catch her making sound effects of the objects she just came up with. For her, the tasks are easier which means she can spend more time being creative than wracking her because she can’t get past levels. Some levels require you gather shards (pieces of a Starite) to complete the missions. but if you get stumped you can just turn on “Starite Vision” for help. Players can roam around the digital world freely and even play as one of Maxwell’s siblings, which are periodically unlocked.
The main drawback for me was that you can only have one game profile. In our family, we share just one console so multiple profiles are a must. That means I have no option to play the game without picking up where she left off or erasing her game completely and starting over. I also wish that the object creator that’s available on the Wii U version, which allows player to customize their creations to save, use, and share them, was present on this offering for the 3DS.
The 3DS version includes:
- All-New Unbound World: Explore an open universe with unlimited hours of fun using every level as your playground.
- Object Library: Store previously summoned objects and your own creations in Maxwell’s “magic backpack” for easy access and future use.
- Merit Board: Each world comes with a comprehensive list of hints, including the new “Starite Vision” helper highlighting all nearby starites and starite shards.
- Street Pass: Leverage the 3DS’ Street Pass functionality to see all of the creative solutions to puzzles used by other players.
The same hand-drawn graphics are present in Scribblenauts Unlimited. The whole game can pretty much be played in 2D, although the story is nice is 3D. If your child creative but found the original Scribblenauts hard or constricting, then they may need to go Unlimited.
Thanks to Pump It Up and their promotion with Scribblenauts during the Imagination Challenge, I get to offer you the chance to win your very own copy of Scribblenauts Unlimited for the Nintendo DS. Enter below!
