Guess the Garden Visitor . . .
The other day, my husband spotted this little guy on our dwarf orange tree (our miniature garden). I have no idea how he saw it since its body color matched the leaves perfectly. Frans immediately called my daughter over, who immediately grabbed something to capture him in. Isn’t it cool? Surprisingly, my daughter was actually the one that identified it.
Can you guess what type of insect this is (without looking at the image tag)? I’ll give you a hint – it’s NOT a Leaf Bug . . . (UPDATE: Answer is below photo.)
It’s an Acanalonia Conica, aka Conehead Planthopper. You can recognize it by the reddish eyes!

That is pretty cool. Nature really is amazing.
Oh – and I wouldn’t have guessed the name… would have called it a leaf bug if you hadn’t given the hint.
Well, that seems like the most obvious answer so to find out it was a Conehead Planthopper was very surprising. I didn’t even know such an insect type existed!
Oh wow! I never saw one of these.
My first time as well!
I have no clue what those would be called – they’re neat looking though!
The only we we figured it out was my bug investigating daughter that gave me a good lead!
What an awesome photo. A walking leaf thing? lol
Hahaha – that’s the most UN-scientific answer yet 😛 It’s a perfect description.
Very cool, it is amazing how much it looks like a leaf
I know. Camouflaged insects are so interesting.
That is AWESOME!!
My bug-loving son says it looks like a “Buffalo Tree Hopper” ….
Good guess and pretty close! Tell him to look up Conehead Planthopper 🙂
Wow, that’s crazy! I would never have seen it.
Me neither. I have no idea how my hubby saw it!
Isn’t Mother Nature amazing?
It really was a fascinating discover!
Not a leaf bug? Dern then I have no idea. But it’s a pretty cool bug to blend in so well. Great camera also to capture it
We assumed it was a leaf bug at first too. I was able to pull out the DSLR to take these shots – it was so tiny that getting the details clear was a challenge.
This is nature beauty 🙂
Very much so!
I don’t even like bugs and I like his one!!
Isn’t it cool?!
