Disney’s Frozen – Definitely the Real Deal #DisneyFrozenEvent

It’s finally coming out! Frozen hits theaters today and I know it will be a hit. The animation, storyline, music, character development, and theme are top-notch and brilliant put together for a moving film loosely inspired by the classic Snow Queen by Hans Christian Anderson.

What is Frozen About?

Instead of a plot featuring good vs evil, we get a story of two very different sisters trying find their place in the world and with each other. Anna is a large-hearted and goofy teen who loves life and everything it offers. Elsa is mature, refined, logical, and perfectly groomed as the heir to the throne. She also has a little secret – she has the ability to freeze things. For Anna’s sake, this fact must be hidden and Elsa draws away from her once-close sister.

After many years, the castle doors will be opened in honor of Coronation Day. Anna experiences what she calls ‘true love’ while Elsa’s fear of her powers being exposed goes terribly wrong. Elsa retreats to the north and finds freedom to be herself amongst the snowy mountains. Unfortunately, she also unknowingly sparked the entire city to be frozen over. Anna sets off to find her sister with a little help from a few new friends in the form of Olaf, Kristoff, Sven, and some rock trolls.

Exceeding Expections

I seriously loved this movie. The animation was gorgeous with the landscape being fashioned after the fjords of Norway and featuring an astounding palace of ice. With most of the actors appearing in Broadway musicals, vocal performances are off the charts. We’ve already listened to the soundtrack countless times as it’s all just so good!

As for the characters, they are all lovable and easy to relate to. Anna is a different kind of heroine though. She’s unafraid, intelligent, inventive, caring, and extremely happy. She’s just a normal girl but with no angst or girl-power vibe. There are times she needs help from others but don’t we all? The other characters are multi-dimensional and their personalities only become fully evident as the film progresses. Olaf, the snowman, was so refreshing as a sidekick. He was not sarcastic in any way but buttery sweet with nothing but good thoughts and intentions. Oh, and he likes warm hugs 🙂

The magical element may be an issue for some. Elsa does create ice from her hands and feet but it’s more like something she can’t help. But, it’s not creepy and there are no spells or conjuring – just sparkly snowflakes and icicles that appear out of nowhere. Even the trolls are just roly-poly rocks and the grandpa once changes some memories by making a dust wad and touching a head. He also throws on into the air to depict how fear will be detrimental to Elsa (it looks like the northern lights but in shapes). To me, these were just simple elements of the story and did not make me uncomfortable.

Family-Approved with ‘Thumbs Up’ All Around

Frozen is appropriate for pretty much all ages. The parents do die and there are some tense scenes but none of these are ‘scary’ or extensively drawn out. The rift between sisters does pull at the heart strings though. Humor is innocent and clever with only two mentions of ‘butt’ for the kiddies. After all, how weird would it be if the snowman said, “Could you get the lower section of my body for me?” Plus, there are some twists and turns that will evoke audible reactions from the audience. I didn’t notice any innuendo or language even close to swearing. Frozen is solid enough (get it, solid, like ice) to break box office records without those.

So get to the movies as soon as you can to see Frozen. That way, you’ll have enough time to see two times or more. I know my family is ready to see it again ASAP!
