For years we’ve been using a single-serve coffee system. It works out so much better for us because, really, my husband is the only one that drinks coffee. I’ll only drink it occasionally because I load it so full of sugar and creamer that it kind of defeats the purpose. The problem with most of these single-serve systems is how it’s limited to just that, a single cup. Sure you can make individual cups for guests but that will be a pain, especially if you have several people that want the same type of coffee or tea. That’s where the Keurig 2.0 comes in.
Keurig 2.0 Review – Brew Up to 30 oz. at Once
The Keurig 2.0 comes with a plastic carafe and makes 4 to 30 oz. in one brew. To brew 30 oz. you do need to use K-Carafe packs, which are almost double the size of a K-cup pack. Only official Keurig branded K-Cup and K-Carafe packs can be used in the Keurig 2.0. You can tell if it will be compatible by the seal on the lid. This is not a big deal unless you have older K-cups that are not marked or like to make your own coffee in 3rd party packs.
I love the display on the K550. It’s bright, easy to see, and is responsive. Unfortunately, it’s also on all the time. The screen does go to sleep but took some getting used to. The hot water feature is nice but the machine is finicky and it takes several tries to fill a mug. I find it easier and faster to use our stand-alone water cooker if I need hot water right away.
The K550 is the top model that includes a large color touch display, programmable controls, nightlight and reservoir light customization, and offers hot water on demand. Other models are void of these and have smaller water reservoir tanks. The only feature I found lacking is the ability to drain the water for cleaning (available on the OfficePRO model).
Keurig 2.0 – Should You Upgrade?
The Keurig 2.0 is brand new, has all the bells and whistles, and fills a 30 oz. carafe at the touch of a button. However, aside from the ability to brew such a large amount at one time, the basic function is the same. If you only need to brew one cup every so often and rarely have guests, then the only difference you’ll notice in changing to the 2.0 will be how it takes up more counter-space. However, if you find yourself pulling out the standard coffee machine a lot, then it’s time to upgrade and consolidate.

I’ve been thinking about getting the Keurig 2.0. I was talking to someone the other day about it and her biggest complaint was that only officially branded Keurig k-cups had to be used. I’m not sure that would be a big deal for me.
We buy the Keurig coffee, but we buy other kinds of coffee too (Meijer store brand Columbian coffee is one of my faves!). It’s a shame to lose the ability to buy outside of brand. I’m not sure if we’ll upgrade or not. I do appreciate coming across the review.
I think in an office setting or for a family, this could prove pretty valuable. I’m not a coffee drinker but I use my Keurig daily for hot cocoa and chai tea!
I really do love our Keurig. It’s the easiest way to make coffee for our guests when they come to visit.
I LOVE my single-serve coffee machines, but honestly was less than impressed with the 2.0 that I received. I don’t like the DRM because there are many other brands of single serve coffee cups that I enjoy drinking and Keurig took that option away from me with the 2.0. Also with large mugs of 10+ oz (which is what myself and my guest consume) the carafe really only brews up 2 or 3 mugs then, sure that’s better than one at a time, but for a group of more than 2 or 3 people, I still have to pull out my 12 cup coffee maker. Because of the DRM, I still have my old Keurig on my countertop along with the 2.0.
I don’t drink coffee, but I would love to review a Keurig for decaf or especially hot cocoa and tea. The carafe option would be nice if there were a few guests that all drink coffee.
This would be perfect for those several cups of coffee days!
Not impressed. A lot of flaws. Husband bought it so that we could brew a pot of coffee. The drawback is that you have to use Keurig Pods and they are only one strength VERY STRONG. I tried a generic pod but it only makes a couple of cups. What is the point. Sounded like a great concept. He also bought it for the specialty drinks for me like lattes or cocoa. They clog the machine and are a pain. Plus if I just use a swiss miss and hot water you get the same result for way less.
Bummer that it didn’t work out for you. 🙁
