I’ve been a fan of the gorgeous footage and pleasant narration of Disneynature films for a while now. The newest title, Monkey Kingdom, will be opening in theaters today. During the last media trip I was on, I was able to attend an early preview of this movie.
Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom
Not all monkey species live the same way and that’s very evident in Monkey Kingdom. Before I get into the review, you might want to check out the official movie summary.
Life is an adventure for Maya, the clever and resourceful blonde-bobbed monkey in “Monkey Kingdom,” Disneynature’s new feature film set among ancient ruins in the storied jungles of South Asia. Maya’s world is forever changed when she welcomes her son, Kip, into her complicated extended family. Like all families, Maya’s has more than its share of colorful personalities—and she’s determined to give her son a leg up in the world.
When their longtime home at Castle Rock is taken over by powerful neighboring monkeys, Maya’s whole family retreats, and she uses her street smarts and ingenuity to uncover untapped resources amidst strange new creatures and unsettling surroundings. Ultimately, they will all have to work together to reclaim Castle Rock, where Maya can hopefully realize her dreams for her son’s future.
Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom Movie Review
There’s a distinct hierarchy among the monkeys featured in Monkey Kingdom and poor Maya, the main star, is at the bottom. The ruins and lush greenery make for some beautiful settings and I loved the interaction with other local inhabitants, those with four legs and those with two. Tina Fey does a fantastic job in adding her voice to the colorful and playful narration.
If you love monkeys, then you won’t be disappointed with this movie. Kids ages 6 and up will enjoy it as well. If you have younger ones, it might be good to screen it yourself first just to make sure the little will be okay with it. A clash of clans does occur so it does get intense. Nothing is really shown but a few monkeys do come out with battle wounds. Think of it as a live action Bambi.
Don’t forget that if you see MONKEY KINGDOM opening week (April 17-23), Disneynature will donate toward helping to protect monkeys and other endangered species in their natural habitats. Learn more at http://nature.disney.com/monkey-kingdom.

I was invited on an all-expense paid media trip as a guest of Disney and Marvel in honor of the Avengers Age of Ultron movie. All opinions are my own.
