One of the newest and hottest tech gadgets is the Powermat wireless charging system. This innovative item supposedly replaces the need for millions of cables you currently use to charge all your household electronics. The more hype and publicity a products receives, the more skeptical I become of whether or not its actually as good as they say.
The 2x Portable Mat and Powercube is really ‘cool’ for lack of a better word. It contains everything you need in one compact kit. The set includes:
- 1 Powermat Rechargeable Mat
- 1 Universal Powercube
- 8 Power tips
- 1 Carry Case
- 1 Power Supply (100- 240VAC)
The case itself is all magnetized, making storage and usage extremely convenient. I love the Universal Powercube and all the tips that can be attached to it. This allows you to utilize the Powermat system with a wide range of electronics.
I had mixed feelings regarding the receiver for the iPhone 4. To use the receiver, you need to remove/replace any bumper or case you currently have on your phone. Obviously, to keep replacing cases is much more of a pain than plugging in your phone to charge. For the Powermat to be really useful, there are two options. Either you keep the Powermat case on all the time or use no case at all so you can easily slide your iPhone easily in and out. Now I do rather like the case and it is very easy to pop on and off. I would prefer the material used to be something more durable and higher quality than basic plastic.
So how does the whole system work?
I am so happy to put away my DSi cable, camera cable, etc. now. Also, when we travel, we usually bring a whole bag just dedicated to cables. Next time I can just bring this one set!
If the Powermat system is going to be worth your investment, I would recommend a mat that can at least charge two items. We don’t have that many things in our house that we need to have charging at the same time so the 2x mat works perfectly for us.
Verdict: The Powermat does what it claims to and does it well. Tech lovers and those with a lot of electronics would be pleased to have this in their home or office. If you do not fall in either of those categories, you are probably better off with the cables included with your device.
