It’s one thing to watch a show on television. It’s a whole other experience to actually visit the working set and see where all action takes place. During our Big Hero 6 and ABC TV event, our group was taken behind-the-scenes of a new family comedy for a fully-guided black-ish set tour.
Behind-the-Scenes Set Tour of black-ish
Oh my goodness! The decor and color schemes are so gorgeous in real life! We all wanted to move in and/or steal the production designer, Maxine Shepard, since she is obviously visually gifted (just wait until I show you the master bedroom)!
You’ll notice the open ceilings and stairs to nowhere. The view outside that window? Just a printed backdrop. I found it interesting that everything was so meticulously detailed, including scuff marks on the washer and dryer as most appliances don’t remain unscathed in real households with kids running around. Everything was neat but not perfect, giving it the look that set was well lived in.
Of course, each of us had to get a commemoratory photo in THE kitchen.
Next we headed up (over) to the second story of the house.
Here’s that master bedroom. Don’t you love it?!
And there was NO way we were missing Dre’s closet. Well, actually, this is only end part of the closet. His shoe and cap collection was bigger than most of the bedrooms while Rainbow’s closet was more like a wardrobe nook. It was so small, I couldn’t even really take a photo of it since other bloggers were always blocking the 2 sq. foot area 😛
Going down the hall, we scoped out the kids’ rooms. Zoey has the “dream” teenage girl room while Junior seems to still be holding onto his childhood. The twins? Well, they just have the most fun room imaginable and you can’t help but want to peek in every cranny.
Just a Little Tease
The tour was almost done and we followed our guide to pass through the last set. However, all of a sudden it went quiet. The other three bloggers and me turned around to find out that the door had been shut and a live taping had begun.
We didn’t get a chance to see what was going on but heard some soft dialogue. All of a sudden, we heard Anthony Anderson exclaim, “STOOL SOFTENER?!” Yeah, we have no idea what that’s all about so we can’t wait to see when it shows up in a future episode, probably sometime next year. After we stifled our giggling and the taping was over, we were allowed a quick look inside. What a perfect ending to our tour.
You get a whole other feel for a show once you see the set. So much goes into design, color combinations, and construction that rarely gets noticed on screen. Great job crew!
More black-ish on the Way!
Tune into black-ish tonight (Wednesday, 11/19) as the infamous mother-in-law/daughter-in-law relationship takes center stage in “Oedipal Triangle” at 9:30 pm. If this teaser photo is any indication, it’s going to be a riot!

I was invited on an all-expense paid media trip as a guest of Disney and ABC in honor of the Big Hero 6 movie and mentioned sitcom series. All opinions are my own.

You live such a fun and exciting life! Always behind the scenes doing and exploring something new and fun! What a great experience! 🙂 Thanks for sharing.
How cool is this, I love that show. I never miss an episode.
Since I don’t ever travel and my life is relatively boring, I’m going to live vicariously through you, TerriAnn, and your exciting life! I bet you had a blast!
Okay, that closet is to die for. I love seeing the behind the scenes of the show. There’s so much that goes into making the show come together.
What a fun experience, it looks like everybody had a great time.
What a fun experience! That laundry room looks amazing and I love how spacious it is. I’d love to do something like this one day.
Just curious….what’s typically “upstairs”? Do the stairs lead to an actors make-up room? Or is there another set of stairs to go down? Recently I’ve been looking for a backstage picture to clear this curiousity but haven’t found one lol.
The stairs actually don’t lead anywhere. “Upstairs” is just another nearby set on the ground floor. That’s why you won’t find backstage pictures since it’s just a movie/tv filming trick. 🙂
