With March 8th being International Women’s Day, this month was the perfect time to honor amazing women who set an example and who empower others to break through that “glass ceiling.” Raising a daughter, it has always been important to me that her goals and dreams not be limited by her gender. That also meant finding entertainment with intelligent, capable females. These kinds of TV shows and movies can also help young boys learn to respect and value the girls around them.
International Women’s Day & Beyond
Netflix is fully behind the message of International Women’s Day and offers many shows which celebrate girl power. Check out this collection of shows with girls and women who are anything but “damsels in distress.”
Streaming Strong Female Characters
Here are some characters that your daughters might relate to:

- McKeyl, Camryn, Adrienne, Bryden, and Quail of Project Mc2
- Claire of Trollhunters
- Little Girl of The Little Prince
- Astrid of Dragons Race to the Edge
- Judy of Zootopia
- Ginger of Chicken Run
A new Netflix Original series, called Julie’s Greenroom, is out now too. In this show aimed at young children, Julie Andrews features the exciting world of art and creativity with celebrity guest stars such as Idina Menzel, Sara Bareilles. I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet but it looks super cute.
What are your girls’ favorite shows with strong female leads?
I received a year subscription of Netflix and a device to stream the content as part of the Netflix Stream Team. All opinions are my own.
