Over the course of my life, I’ve given and received many gifts. Some were big, some small, some expensive, some cost nothing at all – yet they all held some kind of meaning. That’s why the gifts that are given ‘just because’ are the best.
What I consider a good gift is not what is being given but the thought and feeling behind the gift. What makes the gift awesome and memorable is if that is fully conveyed to the recipient and reciprocated.
The one gift that really stands out in my mind is one I gave to my mother. Now as we get older, we truly begin to appreciate what our parents did for us in terms of their love and sacrifice. My mom is one of the hardest people ever to get the nice present for. She’s not easily impressed and has very specific likes/dislikes – which none of my siblings and I understand completely. We’ve given her expensive things, items to add to whatever she is collecting at the moment, dinners, etc. Yet there is one gift that stands out in my memory.
Mugs. Yes, mugs. My mom always loved her two or three coffee mugs by Sandra Boynton. They had been used so often that the bottom of the mugs had turned gray from all the times she stirred her coffee in them. There was no special occasion but I just thought she could use some new ones.
I jumped on eBay and searched for mugs with the art of Sandra Boynton. After searching through listing after listing, I narrowed it down to my favorite ten mugs. After receiving all of them in the mail, I attempted to put them in a nice package (I don’t remember much about that though). My mom loved them so much that, over nine years later, she still uses and appreciates them. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that my gift not only survived all those ‘spring cleanings’ but that she uses them daily.
Now if I could only top that with something special for my husband. Men are so hard to shop for!
